Careers & Employment at Winn Dixie

I set out to write this article, knowing full well what this company was. Instead, turned to the internet to tell me why that one movie was called “Because of Winn-Dixie.” Turns out the movie is called that because the dog in the film/book was found in one of the stores. This movie was basically free publicity because it got the name of the store out there beyond the southeastern United States where it is centrally located.

So now that we’ve got that out of the way, and the distinction has been made, we can move on to your Winn-Dixie application and how to make it the best it can be. The name is mentioned in other things like rap songs, and pop music, but that wasn’t interesting or relevant enough for me to open the article with it. It was however, enough for me to mention it in the second paragraph. Now, let’s talk Winn-Dixie jobs.

A History & Overview of The Company

Alright, now pay attention here, because there’s going to be a quiz at the end of this. No, the company doesn’t make you take a test. I was just going to do it so I know you were paying attention. Yes, that’s why teachers throw out pop quizzes. No, I don’t expect you to actually take the quiz. Yes, I did actually make a quiz, and no, you can’t see it. Can we move on please?

Winn-Dixie began its life as a little old store called Davis Mercantile in 1914. Now that’s what I’m talking about, nice home grown roots. This first store was built in Burley, Idaho, which just feels American to me. Back then, goods were sold on credit, which basically meant that you swore you were good for it, instead of paying up front. Man, people were a lot more trusting back then.

When people realized that selling stuff on faith alone was financial suicide in the 1920’s, Davis Mercantile AKA Baby Winn-Dixie started to lose out on sales. Through a large loan, some acquisitions in Florida, and a name name change to Winn & Lovett, the company became the first industrial corporation based in Florida to be listed on the New York Stock Exchange. That’s when you know you’re in the big leagues, when you have arbitrary slices of company ownership exchanging hands on a daily basis.

While I could go into how money is basically the same kind of social construct, I’ll save that material for articles about jobs in banks. The name finally came about in 1955 when Winn & Lovett bought a chain of stores called 117-Dixie. Through a powerful force of nature, the two fused into the ultimate form known as Winn-Dixie. I love that part of these stories, seeing how it all comes together. Now, the company is an American supermarket chain based in Jacksonville, Florida. In 2012, it was ranked as the 45th largest retailer in the United States.

Winn-Dixie is known for a few things that would be beneficial to mention in your job interview. The first is their sixty private labels, one of which is the line of Chek soft drinks. These bad boys come in over twenty different flavors in addition to diet and caffeine-free varieties of each one. It’s a good thing I’m sitting down, because it turns out they were also responsible for the catchphrase “Beef, it’s what’s for dinner.”

If I had a nickle for every time my dad said that growing up, I would be able to buy Winn-Dixie and run it myself. Another major thing they are known for is their rewards card. This thing is a loyalty card in the purest sense of the word because it rewards people for shopping with the company.

Card holders receive instant discounts on many items in the store, in addition to five cents off gas for their vehicles when they spend $50.00 on store items. There is also a Upromise program which allows customer to receive donations to their family’s college fund numbering between one and five percent of the total purchase on qualifying items.

Winn-Dixie Application Online

The Winn-Dixie online job application can be found on the careers page of their website. You may be fourteen and already have your entire career planned out, but hold the phone. You need to be sixteen to apply. When looking for employment opportunities with the company, you can work in general store operations, or in various departments such as the ones listed below:

  • Bakery
  • Produce
  • Deli
  • Floral
  • Kosher
  • Organics
  • Naturals
  • Catering

You can also search for a job with the logistics, distribution, and support centers of the company. You’ll need to first create a profile on the website before you can apply. Once you’ve done that, you can begin the employment forms. When you’re searching openings, read the job qualifications carefully. Don’t assume you have everything you need because you’ll only be wasting your time, and their time if you try to apply to something that you’re not qualified for.

Once you’ve begun the process, the company will put you through your paces. Personality, skill, and math tests are all common during the process. Whether you’re doing the Winn-Dixie warehouse application, or one for a cashier, you may need to complete these assessments, so be prepared. They are also going to ask about your availability. If you’re a single mom with two kids, that’s one thing, but if you’re a high school kid trying to get a first job, tell them you’ve got open availability outside of school.

Why? How dare you ask me why! Think of it this way, if you say you can work whenever they need you, suddenly you’re dependable and needed. If you say you can work on Sunday nights, but only if you feel like it, well, you’re either lazy or a rockstar. If it’s the latter, why are you here? Was that album not the multi-million dollar success you thought it would be? It’s alright, the world just wasn’t ready for farm animal dubstep. Old MacDonald’s Bass Drop will be a hit some day, I promise.

Benefits Working with The Company

Just throwing this out there, but competitive pay, compensated on-site training, and flexible scheduling are all available for part-time employees the second they are hired. Yeah, welcome to the big leagues! Part-time associates at Winn-Dixie will also earn health benefits like dental, vision, and medical. In addition, they also have healthy behavior programs, life insurance, and employee assistance programs. Yeah that’s right, the company wants everyone from managers down to cashiers and baggers to be happy and healthy!

All of this is offered to full-time Winn-Dixie employees as well, in addition to 401(k) retirement plans, flexible spending accounts, and hospital indemnity insurance. Wow, I’ve written about a lot of companies, but this is truly an impressive set of benefits, especially for the little greenhorns just starting out. The company has certainly earned my respect, and I’m sure it has yours already.

Here’s the plan: kick your little brother, sister, or family pet off of the computer and head to the Winn-Dixie careers page on the website. Oh, do me a favor and tell the family dog to stop messaging that pit bull on Facebook, he’s a bad influence! Once you’re on the site, register yourself and find a job for you. Be ready to answer the questions on the employment forms and assessments truthfully.

From there, all you need to do is iron some nice clothes and hang them up, because your Winn-Dixie application is going to be pristine, and they’ll be calling you for an interview before you know it!
