This little old story begins relatively recently. It all started on September 20th, 1980 in Austin, Texas. John Mackey, the founder, and Renee Lawson borrowed $45,000 from various family members and friends to open a natural food store called Saferway. Yes, they were making fun of Safeway.

I think the more important question is how did they get family members, let alone friends, to let them borrow that much money? Anyway, the couple was actually evicted from their apartment for storing food there and they just decided to live in the store after that. Talk about dedication.

Two years went by before John partnered with Craig Weller and Mark Skilles to merge Saferway with Clarksville Natural Grocery, resulting in the first Whole Foods Market location on the date mentioned above.

Whole FoodsThe original locations was 12,500 square feet, and only had 19 people working on the staff. Despite this, it was quite large for a store of its type at that time. The following Memorial Day in 1981, the company was hit with a massive setback as a massive flood came through the city of Austin, Texas.

Whole Foods wasn’t insured at the time, and they lost over $400,000 as a result. A combination of creditors, vendors, and investors helped bring the store back onto its feet and despite everything it reopened in a mere 28 days after the flood.

Whole foods defines their standard of “natural” food products as “minimally processed foods that are free of hydrogenated fats as well as artificial flavors, colors, sweeteners, preservatives, etc.” There is a full list online of the ingredients that won’t allow in foods they sell. They’ve also come out and said that they won’t sell meat from cloned animals, or offspring of them.
