A History and Overview
Whataburger is based in San Antonio, Texas and specializes in hamburgers as you’ve probably guessed by now. It began way back in 1950 and is still owned and operated by the original Dobson family in addition to 25 franchisers. There is also a breakfast menu offered. This company’s story begins in 1950 when Harmon Dobson and Paul Burton wanted to open a hamburger restaurant. Dobson had a dream of making burgers that required both hands to hold and tasted so good that when you started eating you had to say “What a burger!” out loud.
Dobson snagged the Whataburger trademark in 1950 and in August of the same year opened the first location on Ayers Street in Corpus Christi, Texas. The location was important as it was across from the Del Mar College. Burgers only costed 25 cents, and they also sold chips and soda.
In 1951 the two founders had an argument where Dobson wanted to raise the price of the burgers to 30 cents. Their business partnership ended with Burton getting the Whataburger franchises in San Antonio. A few months later, the prices were raised to 35 cents for a burger. A new location outside of Corpus Christi was opened in 1952 in Kingsville, Texas.
Joe Andrews Sr. became the first non-founder to own a Whataburger franchise in 1953. The next milestone came in 1959 when the first location outside of Texas was opened in Pensacola, Florida. Expansion continued in the next few decades as the company moved into Tennessee and Florida.
French fries and hot pies were added to the menu in 1962. Expansion into Arizona resulted in 26 total locations in 1963. The classic “Flying W” logo was commissioned in 1967. That same year Dobson was tragically killed in a airplane crash. His widow, Grace, took over the business.
The first drive-thru location was opened in 1971 and the 100th location opened the following year. Whataburger was up to 300 stores by 1980 and in the early 90’s, Tom Dobson, the son of Grace and Harmon, took over as CEO and President of the company.
He expanded the menu to offer packages, cookies, biscuits, and chicken strips. The largest location was opened in 1999 in Corpus Christi at 6,000 square feet. It also features a life-size bronze statue of Harmon Dobson.
