It’s hard to hear the name Vons and know exactly what they sell. Even the logo leaves a lot to the imagination. My first thought was a shoe store, and my second one was a department or clothing store. I don’t know, it seemed like a trendy name so I figured it had to be one of the two. Apparently I was wrong though, it’s a supermarket chain. Go figure.
So now that we’ve established what this place actually is, you may be interested to know how you can score yourself a Vons application.
I mean, who doesn’t want to work in a grocery store, am I right? Not even a grocery store, this is a supermarket! With so many different departments, career paths, and options, you’ll never have to work anywhere else.
Let’s find out where this company came from, what they stand for, and how you can start working with them in no time.
The Company’s Vision
Vons is a supermarket chain based out of Southern California and Southern Nevada. They are a division of Safeway actually which is also a great company to work for. The company headquarters are in Arcadia, California.
It operates under the name Vons and the name Pavilions. Now, normally this is the part where I go into their history, but I think I would shake things up this time around.
Why should you work here? What’s the vision the company has? Since Vons is a division of Safeway, they fall under those same principles. Namely, the company is very focused on showing appreciation to its employees and the hard work they do. This starts with competitive pay and benefits, but it goes beyond that.
They are focused on finding the balance between business and the environment. They take constant steps towards reducing their carbon footprint.
Their own line of products is made using natural resources which allows customers to do their part by purchasing those in-store brands.
Vons provides plenty of opportunities to grow and blossom in your career. They value diversity in all things; race, religion, and everything in between. In the company’s eyes, this is what makes you unique. The company offers numerous training programs and methods to further develop your skills as well.
A Brief History of the Company
The company started in 1906 when Charles Von der Ahe opened a 20-foot wide store that he called Von’s Groceteria. This first location was in downtown Los Angeles, California. By the time 1928 rolled around, he had 87 stores and sold the business to MacMarr Stores.
This parent company changed hands as well until the sons of the new owner took over and turned it into the Von’s Grocery Company.
This reinvigoration led to them opening a new line of supermarkets that pioneered the concepts of self-service, prepackaged produce, meat, and deli items. Expansion happened quickly and it became the 2nd largest supermarket chain in southern California, right behind Safeway.
The aforementioned company purchased Vons in 1988 by selling a number of their stores to them in exchange for a owner stake.
Soon after Safeway took control of the company and it’s been a divison of them ever since. Today, Vons has benefited a lot from the acquisition by Safeway. They carry high-quality deli items, meat, seafood, grocery items, and cheeses. A lot of their food is bought from local farmers as well.
Let’s examine how you can leverage this information and knowledge to apply for a position with Vons today.
