Trader Joe’s Online Employment Forms & Careers

My parents discovered Trader Joe’s long before I ever did. Personally I hadn’t ever been there but suddenly they were going on and on about this amazing new store and eventually I just had to see for myself. Trader Joe’s is a privately held chain of specialty grocery stores, and yes, the hype is justified.

Today we’re going to talk about filling out the Trader Joe’s application, and what kind of opportunities await you when working for this company. First though, let’s talk about the company’s history and the products they sell. It’s always important to know about the company your applying for.

The Company’s Products & History

Trader Joe’s is based in Monrovia, California in the Greater Los Angeles area. As of April 2015 there were 457 locations, half of which were located in California. South California to be exact. Overall though, there are locations in 40 states across the U.S.

Trader Joe’s is the top company in the organic and fresh food market for the United States, and for good reason. The company was founded by Joe Coulombe in 1958. Since 1979, the company has been owned by a German family trust established by Theo Albrecht, the owner of Aldi Nord.

After the iconic “Joe” himself started the company in 1958, he originally named it “Pronto Market.” He quickly realized that these markets were too similar to 7-Eleven, so he decided a change was in order. During a vacation to the Caribbean, he noticed that Americans were traveling more often and acquiring new tastes that the supermarkets in the states couldn’t provide.

The first actual “Trader Joe’s” location opened in 1967. The store is still in operation to this day. The original stores has fresh meats that were made by butchers who rented space in the store. At one point there were also sandwich shops, cheese, and fresh orange juice options.

Between 1990 and 2001, the company quintupled the number of stores, and multiplied profits by ten. Now that’s what I call an explosion. In November 2005 the company announced that it would be carrying only eggs which came from cage-free hens.

In May of 2009 Consumer Reports magazine ranked Trader Joe’s as the second-best supermarket in the USA after Wegmans. Later that year MSN Money ranked the company as the second best in customer service. Now, let’s talk products.

Normally a grocery store would carry about 50,000 items total. By comparison, Trader Joe’s only carries 8,000. On top of this, 80% of those items are under the company’s brand name. The products on offer include the following:

  • Gourmet foods
  • Organic choices
  • Vegetarian options
  • Frozen foods
  • Imported items
  • Domestic and imported wine and beer
  • Staple items
  • Hygiene products
  • Cleaners
  • Vitamins
  • Pet food
  • Plants and flowers

Many of the products offered by Trader Joe’s are also environmentally friendly. The products sold under the private labels are significantly discounted compared to the brand name options. In some cases these brands are labeled based on the product’s ethnicity.

There are products like Trader Giotto’s for Italian food, Trader Jose’s for Mexican food, and so on. Since the company sells their products under a private label, they skip out on any middlemen and instead buy straight from the seller so they can more easily regulate their products.

Trader Joe’s is also the exclusive seller of Charles Shaw wine which is actually known by the name “Two Buck Chuck.” Despite the title, it’s not half bad. It used to be sold for $1.99 in California, but the price has since been raised and varies based on state liquor laws and taxes.

Trader Joe’s states that all of its private label products have no artificial flavors, preservatives, MSG or trans fats. There are also no synthetic colors or GMO ingredients. Of course, this does not apply to anything that isn’t under the Trader Joe’s brand.
