Today I’m going to show you how to fill out a Tops application so you can join this company and its growing team of employees. We’ll take a look at the company’s history first so you can have an edge over the competition.

The Company’s Culture and History

Tops was co-founded by Armand Castellani who was born in 1917 outside a village in Rome, Italy. His family traveled to the United States in 1920 and settled in Niagara Falls where his father opened a grocery store. After his mother passed away in 1933, he left school to manage the store.

He continued helping until he joined the army in 1941. He rose to the rank of Captain during his five years of service. After WWII he returned to help out with the family company. He went out on his own in 1951 and opened the Great Bear Market in Niagara Falls.

He partnered with Thomas Buscaglia, who owned a grocery equipment firm. They worked together to build the foundation of what would eventually become the Tops Friendly Markets chain. The company expanded during the 1950’s, and my 1958 they set up headquarters in Buffalo. In 1960 they opened their first supermarket, a 25,000 square foot store on Portage Road.

The company began franchising in 1962 and started opening new stores under the Tops Friendly Markets name. The company had seven stores by the end of the year. The Brand Names Foundation named Tops the Retailer of the Year in 1962 and again in 1974. tops-store-front

Despite other companies failing in the area, Tops continued to grow and open more company-owned stores. Tops entered into the next century by acquiring the Sugarcreek Stores chain. This added 87 stores to the total number. Today Tops has 15,000 stores employees in its total team, and that number is growing.

Tops is dedicated to helping people save money. They offer weekly ads that feature all of the best deals the store has to offer. The ads can be found in the stores or online. There are also coupons offered on the website that customers can redeem. There is also a savings club for customers to earn rewards points, which can go toward free items and discounts on gas.

Next we’ll talk about the process by which Tops hires its associates. I’ll show you exactly how to apply and give you some tips on how to get hired.
