The Company’s History and Culture
Steak ‘n Shake is a casual restaurant chain that is located in the Midwestern and Southern United States. There are also locations in the Northeastern and Southwestern regions, along with Europe, though not as many. The headquarters is in Indianapolis, Indiana.

As of August 2014, the company had 500 total restaurants in 29 states. There are plans in place for the company to expand further into the United States and elsewhere in the world. The company was founded by Gus Belt who was born in Morrisonville, Illinois. He founded the company in Normal, Illinois in February of 1934.
After serving for four years in the Marine Corps he converted the gas station/chicken restaurant he owned called Shell’s Chicken, into a hamburger stand. The original building was located at Main Street and West Virginia Avenue. It was damaged in a fire in the early 1960’s, but it was repaired shortly thereafter.
In the late 1990’s the building was sold to the Monical’s Pizza Company. The original slogan, “In Sight it Must Be Right” was based on Belt’s practice of wheeling steaks into the public area of the restaurant, and grinding them into burgers in front of his customers to show them that his product was real and wholesome.
At the time, ground beef was not popular in the public eye because people were afraid it had impurities in it.
Later on, the customers were assured that the same ingredients were being used offsite and shipped to the restaurant. The open grill line remained in the line of sight for customers to see the food being prepared. The company found success with this model and eventually Belt purchased a chain of “Goal Post” restaurants that he converted into Steak ‘n Shake locations.
Gust Belt passed away in 1964, and the company ownership went through multiple hands for a time. Even Gus’ wife Edith ran the chain until 1969. It had some ups and downs, but throughout the 1990’s and 2000’s, it expanded once again with rapid succession.
In October of 2012 the company announced plans to open forty locations in the United Arab Emirates. The first was scheduled to open in Dubai in 2013. New locations opened in California in July 2014 with a location in L.A. County and one in Santa Monica.
