Known simply as the Sonic Corporation, this an American drive-in fast food restaurant chain. Based out of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, the company had 3,561 locations as of August 2011. He built it up, sold it, and opened his first fast food restaurant. This opened in was called Troy’s Pan Full of Chicken. From here, in 1953, he joined with a business partner to purchase a stretch of land where a walk-up root beer stand named the Top Hat was located. After it was converted, Troy soon bought out his business partner and, after a trip to Louisiana where he saw drive-in restaurants, decided to make the change to his as well.
The new intercom drive-in setup immediately tripled sales. Soon an entrepreneur negotiated the first franchise with Troy and soon after two more were built in 1958. Since the Top Hat name was trademarked, they were forced to change the name to Sonic, which actually worked better with their slogan at the time: “Service with the Speed of Sound.”
