Menu, History & Company Overview

Known simply as the Sonic Corporation, this an American drive-in fast food restaurant chain. Based out of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, the company had 3,561 locations as of August 2011. These locations are spread across over 43 U.S. States and they collectively serve over 3 million people each day. Man, that’s a lot of rollerskating.sonic-storefront

In that same year, Sonic was ranked 10th in QSR Magazine’s top 50 quick-service and fast food brands in the nation. The company is known for having carhops that ride on roller skates.

Each year there is a competition held to determine which carhop in the company is the best skater. In conjunction with Dr. Pepper, there is another internal competition held each year among the drive-in employees.

The company has roots dating back to 1950, but it wasn’t until 1990 that it became incorporated. The menu consists of classic fast food items, and some interesting twists:

  • Burgers and fries
  • Onion rings
  • Corndogs
  • Chili hotdogs
  • Breakfast toaster sandwiches (made with Texas toast)
  • Soda, slushies, and milkshakes
  • Ice cream, sundaes, banana splits

In terms of the drinks, there are a huge number of flavor options that combine to create hundreds of potential combinations. Standard locations have the covered drive in stalls with intercom systems where customers can order. Carhops deliver food to these stalls. Most of the locations also offer patio seating, and many also have drive-thru options as well.

The founder of Sonic, Troy N. Smith Sr. returned from World War II to his hometown of Seminole, Oklahoma and started working as a milkman. He soon switched to delivering bread because it was much lighter than carrying the milk. With larger aspirations, he purchased the Cottage Cafe in the town of Shawnee, Oklahoma.

He built it up, sold it, and opened his first fast food restaurant. This opened in  was called Troy’s Pan Full of Chicken. From here, in 1953, he joined with a business partner to purchase a stretch of land where a walk-up root beer stand named the Top Hat was located. After it was converted, Troy soon bought out his business partner and, after a trip to Louisiana where he saw drive-in restaurants, decided to make the change to his as well.

The new intercom drive-in setup immediately tripled sales. Soon an entrepreneur negotiated the first franchise with Troy and soon after two more were built in 1958. Since the Top Hat name was trademarked, they were forced to change the name to Sonic, which actually worked better with their slogan at the time: “Service with the Speed of Sound.”

Recent developments include a change to the menu in 2010 that incorporated cage-free eggs, gestation crate-free pro, and other changes to the ice cream and hot dog recipes. With things going well for the company, let’s find out how you can join in on this success.
