A Historical Overview
The company has been using its name as part of the marketing in a number of ways over the years. For example, the gift cards are known as “Z cards.” The chicken wings that are sold are also known as “Shwingz.”
In addition, names like the “Shmuffinz” and “Nachoz” are used to name the various foods sold in the convenient store portions of Sheetz locations.
The company was founded by Bob Sheetz in 1952 when he purchased one of the five dairy stores his father owned. This first location was in Altoona, Pennsylvania. In 1961, Bob hired his brother, Steve, to work part-time at the store.
The second location was opened in 1963 under the name “Sheetz Kwik Shopper.” Five years later, the third store opened. Steve became general manager and the brothers put plans in place to open a new store each year.
By 1972, the company had fourteen stores and it was then that they added gasoline pumps which brought self-service gasoline to Central Pennsylvania.
By the time 1983 rolled around, the company had 100 locations. It was then that Bob retired and gave control of the company over to his brother, Steve.
In 1995, Bob’s son became the Chairman of the Board. As of 2016, Sheetz still has a family business with five members serving on the Executive Committee.
Through the mid-1990s, Sheetz also sold its own brand of cola called It! After a certain point, all of the soda options were replaced with Pepsi products. During its time, the cola had received at cult following.
At one point, Sheetz opened a concept store in the Hanes Mall in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. The location functioned as a fast food restaurant with made-to-order options. It didn’t work as well as the gas station counterparts and was eventually closed.
In 2004, several new innovations such as a “Convenience Restaurant” model, and a MasterCar PayPass option were implemented. Sheetz was one of the first retailers to accept this type of payment. They were followed by much of the nation’s major retailers later in 2006.
In July of 2006, Sheetz also became the second retail chain to offer ethanol-based fuel, known as E85. As of today, the company has over 400 locations across six states. There are more than 13,600 employees as well.
In terms of food, Sheetz focuses on a signature made-to-order approach known as “MTO.” The company trains their employees to work as Baristas to make their “Sheetz Bros. Coffeez.” This coffee is a cut above the quality typically offered at convenience stores.
After the “Convenience Restaurant” was introduced, the company starting expanding their menu options. These included made-to-order sandwiches, hot dogs, pizza, panini grilled sandwiches, salads, chili, and breakfast items.
At specialty locations, you can also find an Espresso Bar. Between the years of 2008-2009, Sheetz rolled out their “MTGo!” initiative, which offered various items to grab and go with.
Most Sheetz locations also sell three grades of gasoline, in addition to kerosene and diesel. Some locations have also added E85 and E15 alternatives.
