The Company’s History and Brands

Sephora offers makeup, skincare, body, fragrance, nail color, and hair care products. The company is owned by Louis Vuitton and Moët Hennessy’s luxury conglomerate LVMH. The company began as a perfumery chain in Paris, France.

This was in 1970 and it was purchased by Dominique Mandonnaud in 1993 who merged the company with his own perfumery brand called Sephora. The flagship store was opened in Champs Élysées in 1997. The company was sold to the current owners in July of that year.

The first United States location opened in New York City in 1998. The first Canadian store opened in Toronto in 2004. The North American headquarters are in San Francisco along with corporate offices in New York City and Montreal. There are currently 360 stores in North America.

Worldwide there are 1,700 stores in 30 countries that generated over $4 billion in annual revenue in 2013. The Sephora in Paris attracts over six million people each year.sephora-store-front

Currently, the company is testing a subscription service called Play! By Sephora. For ten dollars each month, customers can get a box containing five products. Right now the service is only being tested in three cities, but it’s planned to launched nationwide in 2016.

There are over one hundred different brands that provide a variety of beauty products. Here are some of the brands:

  • NARS Cosmetics
  • Make Up For Ever
  • Urban Decay

Sephora themselves also have a brand that features an elongated flame logo in standard black print. A couple new brands debuted in 2013 with Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen. There is also a makeup line with Marc Jacobs.

As of October 2006, Sephora also started opening stores in JCPenney. These locations feature the same makeup, skincare, and frangrance brands as the main store. These locations are much smaller at 1,500 square feet in size. Currently, there are 400 Sephora stores inside JCPenney locations.

Sephora also has an environmentally conscious approach to their products. For example, they recently launched new display cases that have 30% lighter frames that according to Global Cosmetic News will reduce CO2 emissions by 220 metric tons.

Sephora Application Online

The cosmetics industry, much like the fashion one, is always on the move. In order to stay ahead of the curve, Sephora constantly hires new people to fill their ranks and increase their knowledge base. Entry-level positions like beauty advisor or sales associate offer you the ability to flex your knowledge of the industry.

You should be comfortable with giving people advice such as fashion tips and recommendations of the products you think would suit them best. This kind of knowledge is doubly important as you move up in the ranks towards a managerial position.

Sephora has a careers page on their website where you can create a user profile and apply online. You can cut down on the time required if you have a LinkedIn profile as the Sephora site will allow you to import this information.

If you’d like to apply in person, the option is available to print and hand-fill the forms needed to apply for a position. You’ll need to bring the finished form into your local store when you’re finished. If you decide to try this approach, be sure to double check the accuracy of your information and head into the store when business is slow and you can speak with a hiring manager.

Sephora has automated emails that notify you of progress once you’ve finished your online forms. You can also follow up with one of the managers, provided you follow the courtesy listed above.

Before we wrap things up, let’s talk about your resume. If you don’t have one, you need to create one before applying to Sephora. If you apply online, make sure you bring one into the location for the hiring manager. A resume is an extremely important piece of the puzzle for any and all job seekers.
