Today we’ll look at the company’s history and culture, then we’ll look at the hiring process and some tips to give you an edge over the competition.

The Company’s Culture and History

The Ralphs Grocery Company was founded in 1873 by George Albert Ralphs. I suppose having a name with an “S” on the end explains why there’s no apostrophe in the company’s name. Anyway, the first store was built on Sixth and Spring Street in Los Angeles, California.

During the course of the 20th century, Ralphs was known as an innovator in the grocery industry. Things like self-service stores and checkout stands were completely new for this time. Each of the stores were designed by architects that were both known and respected by their peers, resulting in locations that had a lot of curb appeal to them.

A perfect example of this is the Ralphs locations in Westwood Village. This location was captured in picture form by Ansel Adams and classified as a Historic Cultural Monument. It was also given a place on the National Register of Historic Places in the 1980’s.

In 1994, Ralphs was purchased by Yucaipa Companies for a cool $1.5 billion. At the time Yucaipa also owned ABC Markets, Alpha Beta, Boys Markets, and Cala foods. Soon after the purchase, all of these locations were rebranded as Ralphs locations. ralphs-store-front

Yucaipa sold Ralphs to Fred Meyer Inc. in 1997. Ralphs Marketplace stores started opening, which followed the Fred Meyer model, minus the apparel that was sold in the other stores. In October of 1998, the parent company of Fred Meyer merged with The Kroger Company.

Fast forward to July of 2007, and Ralphs opened a new 50,000 square-foot store on 9th and Hope street in the South Park neighborhood of downtown Los Angeles. This was the first supermarket of its kind to open here in 50 years.

Ralphs has been featured several times in popular culture, a distinction that not many supermarkets can claim. For example, a Ralphs supermarket was featured in photorealist painter Robert Cottingham’s 1968 painting entitled “Ralph’s II.” This piece has been displayed in the Milwaukee Art Museum.

In the 1998 Coen Brother’s film, The Big Lebowski, the opening scene opens with “The Dude” walking through a Ralphs supermarket. Later in the film, The Dude is searched by a Malibu Chief of Police who only finds a Ralphs card in the character’s wallet and asks “Is this your only form of ID?”

Ralphs also has a line of generic brand products that were donated and featured prominently in the 1984 film Repo Man. The store also made a short appearance in the action film Die Hard in a scene where fire trucks take route away from Nakatomi Plaza.

Not only does this company have strong roots and connections to one of the grocery companies in the world, but it also has multiple pop culture appearances under its belt. Now it’s time to learn how to start your career here.
