A Historical Overview of the Company

After starting in 1932, the company changed its name from Central Market to Price Chopper in 1973. Currently it is owned by the Golub Corporation and run by Neil and Jerry Golub.  In 2010, the company switched headquarter locations to Nott Street in Downtown Schenectady.

The first store that opened in 1932 was called the Public Service Market. It was located in Green Island, New York. The concept worked, and they were able to expand with other stores in the region. In 1943, the Golub brothers bought out the share of the corporation from another investor and started the current parent company: The Golub Corporation.

They were one of the first stores to adopt the S&H Green Trading Stamps, but dropped them in 1973. After this they cut their prices and changed the name of the stores to Price Chopper.

The company was one of the first to start combining food and drug items into one location. They also pioneered the concept of being open 24 hour per day. The Price Chopper supermarkets were state-of-the-art for their time when they first arrived in the 1980’s.

They featured full-service meat, seafood, and bakery departments, along with pharmacies and banks. The early layouts had horizontal aisles instead of vertical ones that faced the cash registers. This type of structure was abandoned in the later years.

A new layout was introduced in 1993 when they introduced pre-made meals and even some locations with food courts as well. This was when they switched the aisles back to the traditional vertical arrangement.

Several acquisitions throughout the late 1900’s helped Price Chopper expand into the New England market. The first New Hampshire store opened in 1999, and then another opened in 2006. Since then, the company has expanded in to Connecticut as well.

The latest store opened in Colonie, New York in 2009 and showcased the company’s investments into green and energy-saving initiatives. For starters, the company started using a 400 kW United Technologies Corp. natural gas fuel cell to power their store. Skylights were installed that could allow them to dim the lights when the sun was out.

Price Chopper also announced in June of 2015 that they would be phasing out tobacco products from their stores. They also announced that a name change to “Market 32” would be happening over the course of the next nine years. The new name is meant to represent the company’s upscale focus and the year in which it began (1932).

Price Choppers possesses three private label brands:

  • Price Chopper (used on most food products)
  • Price Chopper Naturals (organic products)
  • Central Market Classics (upscale branding)
