When it comes to clothing stores, they’re truly a dime-a-dozen, but Old Navy has stood the test of time and provided their unique brand of clothes throughout the year. When it comes to job searching, a stable company like this is always an attractive option.

When it comes to the question of what came first in this case it’s Gap Inc. The massive clothing retailer eventually spawned Old Navy in 1993, though even that first location began as a Gap Warehouse.

The way this whole story started is actually kind of funny. It began when founders Doris and Don Fisher couldn’t find a pair of jeans that fit.

In the spirit of “do it yourself” the two opened the first Gap store in 1969. As the company blossomed and grew, there were a number of spinoff retailers that did business for the Gap under various names. These were added during the 1980s and included the following:

The story of Old Navy started when the Target Corporation started considering a new division of their own that was focused on creating a less expensive of Gap’s clothing. To counter this, Gap Warehouse was created in various preexisting locations.

The next year, these warehouse locations were renamed as Old Navy in order to separate it from the Gap. The first locations were opened in Colma, San Leandro, and Pittsburg, California.

By 2000, there were over 500 locations and the following year saw expansion into Ontario, Canada. In 2005, the president of the time, Dawn Robertson decided they needed to attack the competition head on.

She was looking at Hollister, and American Eagle specifically. She wanted Old Navy to match their “high fashion feel.”

To do this, the logo was changed, and several locations were remodeled to reflect the new focus. On location in St. Petersburg, Florida cost $5 million to develop.

This new approach did away with the warehouse style and instead focused on creating as boutique feel. The new locations were built with green materials and included rock gardens, murals, posters, and a variety of accents.

In 2011, the company was once again rebranded to settle into a family focused store chains. This new rebranding was called “Project ONE.” It was meant to target the ideal customer persona which the company had named “Jenny” who is a married mother with at least one child. Understanding the target customer is a smart way to brand any business, and this particular approach worked well.

Applying to Old Navy is as easy as making the decision to work for them. You can apply online at the company’s career page. You’ll start by making a username and password, then selecting a job opening you wish to apply for.
