Menards Careers & Employment Form

There’s something to be said about a store that stays rooted in family values. Here I was thinking that all those classic mom and pop stores from the old days were a thing of the past. Fortunately for businesses everywhere, there are still stores like Menards that keep that atmosphere alive and well. I may not know much about home-improvement, other than the Tim Allen show, but I’m betting you do, dear reader.

Let’s talk about the Menards application which is your ticket to joining this effective team of knowledgeable associates who can help people like me understand the intricacies of home improvement and hardware in general honestly, because I’m a little lost on the subject, but I have a great respect for those who are well versed in it.

Company Overview & History

Menards is a chain of home-improvement centers that are located in the Midwestern United States. It is a privately held company headquartered in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. There are 285 locations in 14 states. This is the third largest home improvement chain in the United States behind The Home Depot, and Lowe’s. With under three hundred stores, you know they must be doing something right to compete with the likes of the other two companies ahead of them. Let’s see how they got here.

It all started in 1959 when John Menard Jr. started building post-frame buildings in order to pay for his college tuition. By the end of the year, he needed extra crews and equipment to keep up with the demand. After he graduated from the University of Wisconsin in 1962, he purchased land in Eau Claire and set up both an office and a shop. Menards was founded in 1960 and incorporated in 1962.

Menards StoreMany of the post-frame building customers that Menard worked with asked about purchasing lumber products, so like any good businessman, he saw the demand and opened the first Menards Cashway Lumber. In 1969, manufacturing plants started to pop up in Eau Claire. Here he could manufacture trusses, lumber, boards, pre-hung doors, steel, and nails. Today there are a total of four distribution centers.

For forty years, John Menard Jr.’s brother Larry served as the Operations manager, but in 2009 he retired. His son Charlie served as the COO until 2007, at which point he became manager of the Eau Claire Distribution center.

Each of the Menards stores follow a common structure. They are divided into departments which include the following:

  • Building Materials
  • Hardware
  • Electrical
  • Millwork
  • Wall Coverings
  • Plumbing and Housewares
  • Floor Coverings
  • Cabinets and appliances
  • Groceries

There is a front end section of the Menards store layout that includes carry outs and cashiers, as well as a receiving crew who handles deliveries and lumber yard responsibilities. The stores are categorized based on their size, but if you’re looking for the flagship location, I hope you live in Waukesha, Wisconsin because that’s where it’s located.

This massive Menards store is the largest in the chain and has two glass elevators, industrial escalators, and a snack shop. Even if you don’t work in that one though, these stores tend to be large in size. Let’s find out how we can get you a job here.

Direct Competitors

The main competitors for Menards are going to be other home improvement stores, naturally. The best places to apply for include Home Depot which has a similar approach and structure. Lowe’s is a great option as it represents a major competitor. Consider also Ace Hardware as an option. We have in-depth articles on each to assist you with the process of applying.
