A Historical Overview of The Company
Based out of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, Krispy Kreme is makes its iconic doughnuts from a recipe the founder bought from a New Orleans chef. The company’s products are sold in their own stores, as well as grocery stores.
Essentially, anywhere you’d go to buy doughnuts, like a convenience store for example, will sell Krispy Kreme products. The 1,000th shop opened on February 24, 2015 in Kansas City, Kansas. Where did this all start though? To answer that we’ll need to go back to 1933.
In 1933, Vernon Rudolph, eighteen-years-old at the time, began working for his uncle, Ishmael Armstrong. His uncle owned a small general store in Paducah, Kentucky that solid a variety of goods, including a very popular line of doughnuts. The exact origin of this recipe is a mystery, but it is believed that it was inspired by an Ohio River barge cook named Joseph LeBeouf who was famous for light and fluffy doughnuts.
When the Great Depression hit, the store suffered. To combat this, they moved to Nashville, Tennessee and decided to focus on their doughnuts. It was here that they started “The Krispy Kreme Doughnut Company,” in a rented store on Gallatin Road.
In 1937, Vernon Rudolph opened his own store in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. He decided on this location because his favorite cigarette company, Camel Cigarettes, was headquartered in the same city.
He began by selling his doughnuts primarily to convenience stores, but he would also sell to individuals if they came in between production time which was between midnight and 4 am. Man, talk about a doughnut craving.
The classic logo that we know and love was designed by Benny Dinkins, a local architect. The first store to open outside the south as the one in Akron, Ohio in 1939. Throughout the 1950’s the company expanded rapidly. In December of 2001, the first store outside the U.S. opened in Ontario, Canada.
Since 2004, international expansion has been fast and furious. Today there are almost 100 locations in Mexico alone! In 2013, Krispy Kreme announced that they were expanding into Colombia, the first South American country that the company will have a presence in.
Coffee and Doughnuts just go together. You know who else knows that? Dunkin Donuts, that’s who! But why stop there, you can always become a barista and join the Starbucks team as well if you wanted to. If you’re looking for a little variety in your breakfast, try applying to McDonald’s.
