Almost all of the locations in the six states mentioned above are located within 280 miles of the main warehouse in Black Mountain, North Carolina. The company’s story begins in 1963 when Robert P. Ingle opened the first location in Asheville, North Carolina.

From the get-go, the company was always meant to be called “Ingles” not “Ingle’s.” Robert’s decision to go into the grocery industry was not random though, he was following in his own father’s footsteps. His father had been in the grocery business since 1956. In 1982, Ingles purchased a milk processing and packaging plant from Sealtest which is operated as Milkco Inc, a subsidiary of the company.

Two-thirds of the business that Milkco does is from food service distributors, grocery warehouses, and independent specialty retailers in 17 states as of 2010. The company’s business since the purchase has expanded into citrus, tea, and bottled water. Ingles Gas Express stations began appearing in the 2000s along with new locations.

Following the passing of Robert Ingle himself on March 6, 2011, his son Robert P. Ingle became the CEO of the company. In December of 2012 and the following year, the company worked with Eblen Charities on what they called “Ingles Toy Store” which offered various holiday items such as toys, games, clothes, and stocking stuffers to needy families in North Carolina.

The current President of Ingles, Jim Lanning, was born and raised in North Carolina. He began working with the company at the age of 16 as a service clerk. In 1977, he graduated from TC Roberson High School in Asheville, North Carolina. He continued working with the company until he was promoted to stock clerk and subsequently to Grocery Manager.

He was dedicated and determined, which earned him an Assistant Manager position after that. Lanning knew that his continued education was an important aspect of his growing career. He graduated from Western Carolina University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration. After receiving this degree, Lanning was promoted to Store Manager.

He took on other stores and made moves to better himself and the company, showing that he was willing to go anywhere he was needed. He received a promotion to District Manager in 1995. He worked in the northeast Georgia region until he was hand-picked by Robert Ingle himself in 2003 to be the President of Ingles Markets, Incorporated.

The company’s mission is shown on the website as follows:

“We are committed to providing our customers with outstanding selection and value, the highest quality products and superior customer service. Inspired by the “small town values” upon which we began our company, we remain dedicated to our customers, our associates, and our communities.”
