A History & Overview of the Company

November 26th, 1905. Besides being someone’s birthday I imagine, it was also the date that Florence Butt opened the first C.C Butt Grocery store on the first floor of the family home in Kerrville, Texas. I’ve heard of working from home, but that’s just ridiculous. In 1919, the youngest son, Howard Edward Butt, took over the family business.

Howard tried multiple times to expand the company, but it wasn’t until he set up shop in Del Rio that things finally took hold. After three additional purchases that opened an equal number of locations, the name of the store was changed to his initials: H-E-B. Boom, that’s where the name comes from, initials! Wow, what a twist, it sure beats the stuff M. Night Shyamalan has put out lately.

As a privately held supermarket, the company has been thriving over the past few years. It appeared on Forbes Magazine’s list of the largest privately held companies, resting comfortably in the twelfth spot. The headquarters is in San Antonio, Texas. H-E-B operates three hundred different stores in one hundred and fifty different communities across the great state of Texas.

Beyond Texas, H-E-B also has stores in Mexico, where they have crossed the $1 billion in annual revenue mark as of 2012. The company has a big heart, with a five percent donation of their annual earnings given to local communities and charitable organizations. With 76,000 full-time team members, the company is large, and ever growing. There are a number of entry-level positions available, including cashiers, baggers, and stockers. Positions are also available across the store’s different departments, and career oriented people will find plenty of potential for upward movement in the company.
