The Company’s History and Products
It all started in 1935 when David Shakarian opened a health food store in downtown Pittsburgh. He called it Lackzoom. On the first day he made a paltry $35, but within six months he was able to open a second store. Things seemed to be looking up for Shakarian.
Then the unthinkable happened. The Ohio River flooded on St. Patrick’s day that year and wiped out both of his stores. Now, most people would have given up at this point, but David got both stores rebuilt and managed to open not one, not two, but five more stores by 1941.
On September 1, 1936, the company officially registered itself as a corporation. During WWII, the company moved into the mail order business. Customers would send checks and he would ship the items to them. They did this because of the strict gas rationing that was happening during WWII. They couldn’t drive to his stores.
There was a large surge of interest in health food during the 1960’s, which resulted in Shakarian expanding his stores outside of Pittsburgh for the first time since they opened. It was during this process that he decided to change the name of the stores to General Nutrition Center. He kept on running the stores until he passed away in 1984.
During the 80’s he took the company public. After he passed away, the company decided to sell the company. They hired Jerry Horn to fix up the company and find a buyer. Eventually, GNC was sold to the Thomas Lee Company in the late 1990’s.
Thomas Lee took the company public again before they sold it to Royal Dutch Numico who acquired it in 1999. It as then sold a few more times before going public in 2011.
Each of the General Nutrition Center stores have a range of products surrounding weight loss, bodybuilding, nutritional supplements, vitamins, natural remedies, and health/beauty products. There are first and third-party brands available for many of the products.
There are over 6,000 locations in the U.S. including 1,100 locations where they have a GNC inside of Rite Aid. In addition there are locations in 49 other countries. There are a combination of corporate-owned and franchised locations.
950of the 5,000 U.S. stores are franchises within urban shopping malls and shopping zones. Next we’ll take a look at the company’s hiring process.
