Friendly’s Employment Forms & Careers

Friendly’s is a restaurant chain with locations primarily on the East Coast of the United States. It was founded in 1935 in Springfield, Massachusetts by Curtis and S. Prestley Blake. Overall the company has 10,000 employees.

Today we’ll look at the company’s history and how they managed to come back from the brink and return stronger than ever. I’ll also show you how to fill out the Friendly’s application so you can start a career with this company. Let’s get started!

The Company’s History and Menu

When it comes to a restaurant, the two things that make it stand out from the rest are the company’s history and its menu. Knowing these two things will give you a full understanding of the company and its goals.

Currently there are a total of 380 Friendly’s locations in fifteen states and ten-thousand companies working for the company in total. It all began back in 1935 when the Blake brothers founded the company in Springfield, Massachusetts. The first Friendly’s location, known as “Friendly”, was a small ice cream shop which sold double-dip cones for a nickel each.

In 1940 they opened a second location in West Springfield with an additional food menu. During World War II the brothers closed the business down until it was over. In 1951 the company had grown to 10 Friendly’s locations in Connecticut and Western Massachusetts.

As the company continued to expand, the headquarters was moved from Springfield to Wibraham in 1960. By 1974 the company had an astounding 500 restaurants in the mid-Atlantic, Northeast, and Midwest. They also opened a food processing and distribution plant in Troy, Ohio.friendly's store front

The Blake Brothers decided to retire in 1979 and Friendly’s was sold to the Hershey Foods Corporation which operated it as a wholly owned subsidiary. In 1988 Donald N. Smith purchased the company from the Hershey corporation and incorporated it into Tennessee Foods. It wasn’t until 1989 that Smith added the “s” to Friendly’s with the apostrophe.

The company debuted on the NASDAQ stock exchange in 1997 under the FRND ticker. The opening price for stocks in Friendly’s was $18 per share. The shares peaked around $26 per. At this point there were plans to open 100 new locations over the course of the next decade.

In 1998 Kim Andereck was hired as viced president of franchise development and brought an aggressive plan to get the company moving forward. At this point the locations were company-owned. Today over 50% of the restaurants are franchise-owned.

In the summer of 2000, the company switched to the stock ticker FRN, and it was bought out by Sun Capital Partners Inc. for $337 million. Things took a turn for the worst in October of 2011 when a combination of a dwindling economy, rising costs, and changing customer preferences resulted in Friendly’s filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.

Normally this would be the end of any company, but Friendly’s wasn’t about to go down without a fight. By January 2013, the company had come back from the brink and started moving in the right direction. I think it’s important to note a dark period in a company like this, because it shows how resilient it can be in the face of tough times.

In terms of the menu, Friendly’s is best known for its ice cream options. They have just about every kind of flavor or sundae you could think of. I’m talking root beer floats, milkshakes, ice cream rolls, ice cream pizzas, and more. It’s insane how creative they get with this cold treat.
