Honestly, I didn’t expect Food Lion to be a Belgian-American grocery store chain. Their logo, to me, looks like a mix between the Sphinx and maybe some sort of Mayan God. Either way, it’s an awesome logo, I’ve got to give them that. The lion is the king of the jungle, and with how many locations this company has, it seems the lion is the king of grocery stores as well.
We’ll show you how to join this pride of proud lion-people by filling out a Food Lion application. There are a number of opportunities with the company, everything from the store, to corporate, to distribution. There truly is something for everyone in this company. Let’s see how they rose the ranks from lion pup to king of the industry.
The Secret to Success: A History & Overview of the Company
You don’t just wake up one day and become a Food Lion. No, it’s a long, arduous trip through the dredges of rock bottom before you ascend to the endless savannah of Elysium where other lions roam amongst gazelles made entirely of money. To that point, the company started out in Salisbury, North Carolina in 1957 as Food Town.
Founded by Wilson Smith, Ralph Ketner, and Brown Ketner, the company ascended to the name Food Lion in 1983 when it was purchased by the Belgium-based grocer Delhaize. Through powerful methods of fusion and massive truckloads of money, Food Town was able to ascend to lion status. Not quite historically accurate, but you get the idea. Now, the company operates over a thousand locations across the Mid-Atlantic and South Atlantic states in addition to Georgia, Kentucky, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia.
Food Lion is the largest subsidiary of the Delhaize Group, which they are located over in Belgium and operate food supermarkets in seven different countries. Something that is worth mentioning in your interview, and a nice quality of the company, is their support of local communities and farmers. To facilitate this, the company partners directly with local growers and lists them on the website.
For those interested, the website also provides detailed listing of the goods that each farm and grower provides. Information about the location and owners is provided as well, lending an element of transparency that most companies are not willing to provide.

Through this, they can cater to their wide variety of customers that visit their stores, and maintain the image they have created. You think a lion’s mane just looks like that? Yeah, okay, as if there’s not a thousand pounds of product in there.
2. Corporate Careers
The corporate offices of Food Lion are located in Salisbury, NC which is about forty miles northeast of Charlotte and approximately 7,883 miles from the African Savannah, give or take. That was a lion joke in case you didn’t catch it. Because this is the beating heart of the company, there are plenty of career options spanning across a various departments, and in elements of the retail operation.
The location of the corporate headquarters places Food Lion directly in the Piedmont region, bringing it close to recreational, cultural, and educational opportunities for people living nearby and working there.
3. Distribution Center Careers
Food Lion has a total of seven distribution centers spread across North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia. If you’re interested in working with one of these centers, be sure to contact them directly if you don’t see a position posted online. Because these places are so hustle and bustle, they don’t always post every opening online.
You can’t compete with a lion, you just can’t. I mean, if you’re a dragon, or some sort of Sasquatch, maybe, but even then it would still be a close fight. As far as the company goes, there are competitors who may be interested in hearing from you. Consider applying to Kroger, for a similar setup, with bold ideas. Publix is always looking for good people, and the company itself is very good to its employees. You could always play it safe and apply to Safeway as well, for reasons beyond my horrible pun.
