Dick’s Sporting Goods, also known as simply “Dick’s,” is a fortune 500 company that specializes in the retail sales of sporting goods. The company headquarters is in Findlay Township, Pennsylvania.
Today we’ll look at the Dick’s Sporting Goods application in more detail as we examine the company’s history, culture, and hiring process. All of these things will contribute to a successful career with the company.
A History and Overview of the Company
Dick’s has 610 stores in 47 of the United States as of 2015. Most of these are located in the eastern half of the U.S. The company also owns Golf Galaxy Inc which is composed of 82 stores in 30 states.
They also run a few specialty chains called True Runner and Field & Stream. The company was founded in 1948 by Richard “Dick” Stack. Since then the company has grown to become one of the largest sporting goods retailers in the world.
It all began when Richard Stack was working in an Army/Navy store. It was located in his hometown of Binghampton, New York. He started working in the store after World War II.
The owner asked Dick to start looking for new ways to expand the product line. Things like fishing and camping supplies were on the list, but the owner rejected these ideas. He even went so far as to tell Dick that he “would never make a good merchant.”
That’s never a good idea. Usually it’s the underdogs that take the top prize, and that was indeed the case here. Later that day, Dick told his grandmother that story. She handed him $300 from her savings and told him to always follow his dreams.
Dick started things out by renting a storefront where he opened a bait & tackle shop. It was located on Court Street. By the mid-1950s, the store expanded to start selling general sporting goods.
Things took off, and a second store was opened in the city of Vestal, NY. Dick continued running the corporation until 1984 when he retired. His son, Eddie Stack took over the company afterward.
Edward started working in the company in 1977 as a store clerk and by the time he was named CEO he had worked his way up to merchandise manager, store manager, and eventually President of the company.
Starting in 2013, the company started doing a ship-from-store platform for online orders, as opposed to a separate company with varying prices which had been the plan before.
The new system ensures that the stores have a detailed inventory of their items. Product is pulled from stores to fulfill online orders which reduces shipping costs. As of 2009, customers could also return items from the website in the store.
The company currently sponsors several sporting events as well:
- Sponsor of the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro
- Dick’s Sporting Goods High School National Basketball Tournament
- ESPN Kickoff Week (football)
- Dick’s Sporting Goods Park (soccer)
- The Dick’s Golf Open
- The Pittsburgh Marathon (running)
The Pittsburgh Penguins hockey team, the Colorado Avalanche and the Colorado Rapids are also sponsored by the company. Next up we’ll look at the company’s hiring process.
