Company Overview & History

Founded in 1951, Circle K is a chain of company-owned convenience stores that are owned and operated by Alimentation Couche-Tard who are based in Canada. They are also the owners of the Tiendas Extra Mexican stores.

Since the early 1980’s, Circle K has been the unchallenged king of company-owned convenience stores in the U.S. In terms of overall stores, adding in franchised locations, it was second only to 7-Eleven.

Though the company faced some challenges in the 1990’s, it has since risen back into the top four stores of its kind. Some locations have gasoline pumps as well that sell Union 76-brand motor fuel. There are other locations that carry Mobil, Marathon, Phillips 66, Irving, BP, Sunoco, or Shell-brand fuels.

There are Circle K locations in Mexico and Asia. For example, in Hong Kong it is known as OK which refers to the circle around the K in the logo. There are currently 349 locations in China. Today the company is primarily located in the Southern, Western, Southwestern, and Midwestern United States.

As of 2013, Circle K started branching into New York with a store in Long Beach. Going all the way back to the beginning, the company began when Fred Hervey purchased three Kay’s Food Stores in El Paso,

In 1951 he renamed the stores “Circle K Food Stores Inc” instead of “Kay.” The chain grew into New Mexico and Arizona soon after. Harvey went on to serve two terms as mayor of El Paso in the future.

The company’s reach grew through acquisitions over the next few decades. These purchases were incorporated into the Circle K brand. By 1975 there were over 1,000 locations across the U.S. In 1979 the company entered the international market by opening the first location in Japan.

Circle K stores in Japan are run by the Circle K Sunkus corporation which licenses the Circle K brand. In 1983 the locations increased to 2,180 when the company purchased the UtoteM chain that added 960 stores to the total.

One of the major flagship products of Circle K was introduced in 1983 as the Thirst Buster fountain drink. Today it is known as “Polar Pop” in many locations. The concept is that customers can buy any size for a single price.

From 1983 to 1990, Karl Eller served as the CEO. During that time he brought Circle K into the largest publically owned convenience store chain in the U.S. He brought revenues from $747 million to over $3 billion.

After a decline in the economy, Circle K was purchased by a investment group who started to pull the company back up from a downward spiral. Since then the company has bounced back into a healthy competitor of today’s modern convenience stores.
