The call their customers “Charlotte GIrls.” Odds are many of us have either shopped here or passed by one in the mall. I know my girlfriend has taken me here more than a few times. It seems nice though, down to Earth, and the people working there are having a great time.

How would you like to work here? All it takes is a Charlotte Russe application, and you’re on your way. Today we’ll look at the company’s culture and history before showing you how to start a career with this company.

The Charlotte Russe’s History & Culture

Charlotte Russe is a clothing retail chain headquartered in San Francisco, California. It operates in the United States and targets a young market of women in their teens and twenties. There are locations in 45 states total in malls and shopping centers. As of 2014, there are 560 locations.

This story began when Daniel Lawrence and his two brothers were working in the clothing business in Brooklyn, New York.

When they were old enough, they created the Lawrence Merchandising corporation. This company began as a single clothing store in Carlsbad, California in 1975. The store was named after a french dessert that they loved as children. Want to take a guess what it was?

Yep, Charlotte Russe. The two owners continued to open locations within the San Diego, California area throughout the 1970s and the early 80s.

The first store outside this area was 20,000 square feet, which was much larger than the other locations. Most of them at this time were only 5,000 square feet.

In the 1990s, the company switched their style to appeal to the aging audience they had and the daughters of those people. One of the Lawrence brothers made the comment that “we attract women of a certain attitude, not age.” This approach has kept them focused on both clothing and accessories that appeal to the people in their areas and demographics.

In 1991, the company was able to make a net sales figure of $50 million. In 1996 the company was purchased by Saunders Karp & Megrue, an investment firm. The new owners were poised to expand on the Charlotte Russe brand. They took the company and evolved it into a national chain and took the company public in 1999.

It was privatized again in 2009 when Advent International purchased it and placed Jenny Ming in the position of President and CEO. The culture of Charlotte Russe revolves around trendy fashion including clothes, shoes, jeans, accessories, dresses and more. The promise is that these things will be modern, but also affordable for young women.

The type of customer that the company is looking for is known as a “Charlotte Girl.” As the company states on the website: “Our Charlotte Girl is passionate about fashion, shopping, and looking fabulous for every occasion and mood in her life whether it’s pretty/flirty looks during the day or looking sexy/glam for her nights and special occasions.”

The site goes on to explain that the ideal Charlotte girl has the following characteristics: “Our Charlotte Girl is daring, shy, adventurous, happy, hopeful, smart, independent,a best friend, a sister, a daughter, amazing, inspirational…she’s everyone and every mood- we believe that every girl has a little Charlotte in her and that everyone is a Charlotte Girl.”

It’s a nice approach that encourages young women to be themselves and rock their own fashion. In a world that pressure women to look a certain way, Charlotte Russe wants them to just be themselves and love their looks at all times of the day.

It’s a good message, and a good company to work for. Let’s find out how you can make that happen.

Clothing stores are a dime-a-dozen it seems, but each has their own special approach. Take Hot Topic for example, which is a very punk/grunge type clothing store, but it has its own approach. Don’t forget PacSun which appeals to the surfer within all of us.

Finally, don’t forget to apply for a career at Burlington Coat Factory to sell the finest clothing for all special occasions.
