The Company’s History and Culture
Champs Sports is a subsidiary of Foot Locker, which is a successor to the F.W. Woolworth Company, also known as Woolworth’s. The Woolworth Company came into the spotlight in 1963 when it purchased the Kinney Shoe Corporation and operated it as a subsidiary.
After this, Woolworth’s started branching into specialty shoe stores, the first of which being Stylco in 1967, followed by Susie Casuals in 1968, and then Foot Locker in September of 1974. The main strategy here was to start as many specialty stores as they could in enclosed shopping malls.
By trying out a bunch of different concepts, the company was able to see which industries worked, and which did not. The ones that didn’t perform would be replaced quickly with another concept since the store spaces weren’t extremely large.
In 1988, Woolworth’s created a separate company called the Woolworth Corporation in New York. This new company was meant to oversee operations in the Foot Locker stores. It is here that our story reaches the topic of the day. The first company it acquired was Champs Sports, at which point it renamed itself the Woolworth Athletic Group.
Champs Sports is one of the largest athletic and apparel mall retailers in America. With a huge variety of products in their repertoire, the company stands out from the rest of the pack by offering customers an unparalleled selection of sports equipment.
There are Champs Sports locations in the United States, Puerto Rico, Canada, and the U.S. Virgin Islands, so there are plenty of locations to choose from. When Champs Sports was purchased in the 1980’s, along with Afterthoughts and Northern Reflections, it fought with these other stores to stake its claim in the overall strategy of Woolworth’s.
Among the three, Champs Sports was the most successful. Each year, the company also sponsors the Champs Sports Bowl which is held annually in Orlando, Florida at the Citrus Bowl. This bowl pits the Atlantic Coast Conference against the Big East.
While Champs Sports carries a wide range of products within the sports industry, the major focus here is on footwear. The parent company Foot Locker, ensures this.
