The Company’s History and Culture

BI-LO began in 1961 after it was founded by Frank L. Outlaw. The first name for the company was Wrenn & Outlaw, but it was changed to the current name in 1963. The new name was chosen when Outlaw conducted a naming contest to develop a strong brand for the

His secretary, Edna Plumblee won the contest when she submitted the name “BI-LO.” The company was sold to Ahold, a Dutch food conglomerate, in 1977. In 1994 the parent company purchased Red Food Stores Inc and merged all 55 of the locations in Georgia, Alabama, and Tennessee with BI-LO a year later. Another purchase of the Birmingham, Alabama based Bruno’s Supermarkets was incorporated into the main brand in 2001.

The company invested into new store designs in 2003, rearranging the layout to bring in more high-end customers. This gave rise to the concept of Super BI-LO, a larger variation of their store layout with healthier foods, specialty items, and organic options. This new layout was chosen to be used in several new locations, and in remodeled stores near affluent neighborhoods.

Throughout 2004 and 2005, the company removed its private label and replaced it with new packaging and a new name: “Southern Home.” Ahold sold the BI-LO brand to Lone Star Funds in 2005. The new owners sold 104 locations in order to focus on renovating and building new stores in better areas.

On December 19, 2011, BI-LO announced that it would merge with Winn-Dixie to create a total organization of 690 grocery stores and 63,000 employees. With locations in eight states, BI-LO purchased Winn-Dixie for $530 million in the agreement that it will keep its name and become a subsidiary.

The new company was moved to the Winn-Dixie headquarters in Jacksonville, Florida. The company’s culture is centered around a guarantee that everything they sell will be at a savings to the consumer without a sacrifice to the quality of the product. The company brings in premium-grade meats, hand-selected produce, and a variety of pre-made products that are fresh every day.

This guarantee is backed by a “double your money back” promise that if you’re not satisfied, your refund will be doubled. BI-LO also prides itself in a community-focused corporate citizenship.
