By 1966, both of the founding members had passed away and the company was sold to Amtel in 1966. Leonard Riggio purchased the company in 1971 for $1.2 million. At this point is had been badly managed and was reduced to only a single retail location.

The company moved to focus on larger stores during the 1970s and 1980s. Barnes & Noble also started publishing out-of-print titles and sold them through a mail-order catalog which offered them to customers nationwide.

Expansion continued through the 80s and in 1986, the company purchased the B. Dalton chain from Dayton Hudson. They also purchased Bookstop, a 22-store chain. By 1999 it was the second-largest online bookseller in the United States.

Prior to the online store, Barnes & Noble sold their books to customers through mail-order catalogs. The first online sales began in the late 1980s. This was part of a partnership between Sears and IBM called Trintex. The official launch of the website was in May 1997.

Video Games and related accessories were sold in the company’s GameStop outlets until it became an independent company. At the time I was still working at GameStop and I lost my discount at Barnes and Noble. I’m still mad about that, but I’ll get over it.

William Lynch became CEO in March of 2010 after he was credited with helping the success of the electronic book store Barnes & Noble maintains through its e-book reader called the Nook.

The main competitor, Borders, went bankrupt and closed in 2011. This left Barnes & Noble as the last retail bookstore chain in America. Today competition still comes from general retailers like Amazon and Books-A-Million in the physical retail space.

As someone who personally shops here, I can offer some advice on the company’s customer service focus and the selection. In short, Barnes & Noble stores are huge! There are sections for just about every type of book, comic, and type of literature you can imagine.

Many locations are also two floors total and also have the aforementioned cafe. The Starbucks-inspired section of the store has its own area with tables and chairs as well. The coffee selection has everything you would expect from the coffee giant, but there are a larger selection of danishes and sandwiches.

You’ll spot employees out on the floor assisting customers or manning the main desk where you can ask about a specific title. The wide open design of the store, combined with the cafe make this a fun place to shop and no doubt a fun place to work as well.
