Employment & Careers at Albertsons

Albertsons is one of those names that has always been around for me. We used to have a location down the street from where I lived. I always liked going in there because the store was arranged with wide open spaces and various setups of products in addition to the typical aisles you see in a grocery store. It was also well lit and had these white floors that made everything feel fresh and new. This company is continuing to grow and expand, acquiring other companies and growing with each passing year.

Now who wants an Albertsons application? Yeah, that’s what I was thinking too. On the surface, it may just be a grocery store, but when you dig deep into the past, present, and future of the company, you start to how they’ve managed to hold their ground and devour the competition over the years. Let’s see how they did it.

Company Overview & History

Albertsons is an American grocery company that is currently based in Salt Lake City, Utah. In July 2014, this already massive company acquired Safeway for $9.2 billion, so now it just got really serious. You know a company means business when they start throwing around the billions like it’s nothing. Currently there are 2,400 stores and more than 250,000 employees working for the company. This makes them the second largest supermarket chain in North America behind The Kroger Company.

The store has several proprietary brands like Jewel-Osco, Shaw’s, and Star Market. The story of this company begins all the way back in 1939, when Joe Albertson founded the company in Boise, Idaho. The local newspaper, the Idaho Statesman described it as “Idaho’s largest and finest food store.” Back then features like free parking, money-back guarantees, and an ice cream shop were new and exciting features that the store had. The original store is actually still standing.

This first store, as you can imagine, was a huge success. Profits fueled new stores in local towns nearby: including Nampa, Caldwell, and Emmett. These were all built before the Pearl Harbor attack in December of 1941. After World War II, the company continued to steadily grow. When Joe wanted to build a new store, he would actually drive through a town and look for neighborhoods where children were playing and clothes were hanging on clotheslines outside. He always said that these were the places where he wanted to build his stores.

The company went public in 1959 and opened its 100th store in Seattle in 1964. Two years later, Albertsons entered southern California by purchasing Greater All American Markets which was a small chain in Orange County. In 1969 the company partnered with Skaggs Drug Centers to create the first ever combination food and drug stores. This unique combination is something many modern stores utilize to this day.

On the website, Albertson’s Mission reads as such:

“To create a shopping experience that pleases our customers; a workplace that creates opportunities and a great working environment for our associates, and a business that achieves financial success.”

Quite simply, this is a grocery store that sticks to its ideals and seeks to be a family friendly location where customers can find great prices, and high quality products. You really can’t ask for more than that, so let’s see what they can offer you in terms of a career.
