The Company’s History & Culture
Advance Auto Part is the largest retailer of automotive replacement parts and accessories in the United States, which is really saying something. They earned this right through their sheer number of stores after acquiring the company CARQUEST in October of 2013.
Commonly abbreviated as AAP, the company was founded in 1932 and today averages sales of $6 billion or more across 3,800 stores located in forty U.S. states. In total, over 55,000 employees work for this company.
All of this began in April of 1932, when Arthur Taubman purchased the Advance Stores from Pep Boys. There were two stores at the time: one in Roanoke, Virginia, and the other was in Lynchburg, Virginia.
In 1998, the company had its first major expansion when it acquired Western Auto which was an auto parts retailer. In April of 2001, Advance Auto Parts purchased Carport Auto Parts which had 29 stores in Alabama and Mississippi.
In November of that year, Advance Auto Parts acquired Discount Auto Parts Inc. which earned them 671 stores in Florida, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, and Louisiana.
After numerous acquisitions, the last of which was in 2013, the company now has the title of the largest automotive retailer in the United States. In 2014, Advance Auto Parts started a loyalty program called SpeedPerks.
Enrolling in the program earns customers discounts on purchases without the need for rewards points. When someone spends at least $30 in the store, they get a $5 off coupon in their email. If they spend $100, they earn a $20 off coupon.
Advance Auto Parts has appeared on the Fortune 500 list of companies since 2003 when they debuted at 466. As of 2014 it was ranked 1,412 on Forbes magazine’s list of “World’s Biggest Public Companies.”
The company is also an “elite partner” for fundraising with the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. They’ve donated over $42 million since 1994. The company accepts donations in store and also sales paper sneakers that they display in the window. All of these profits go to the JDRF.
