I really like the story of Ace Hardware, but you’re going to have to wait a moment before I spill the beans. This is a store that has a rich history and a proven track record of providing quality items and outstanding service to its customers. This is a company that has not only stood the test of time, but one that has positively thrived. We’re about to head back in time to the early 1900’s, but before we do that, we need to outline some goals.
Okay first things first we need to get you an Ace Hardware application, and then we need to find out the winning lottery numbers for the last eighty years and jump around time winning tons of money before we come back to the present. I have a fairly strong grasp on quantum mechanics so I don’t think that’s going to mess anything up. Okay fine, we’ll stick to just exploring the history of the company.
Company History & Overview
I know the time machine malfunctioned and now you have a third arm in the center of your chest, but I promise you we’re going to get that fixed. In the meantime, could you type this article for me? Nice, that’s much faster. So welcome to 1924, when Richard Hesse, E. Gunnard Lindquist, Frank Burke, and Oscar Fisher founded Ace Hardware in Chicago, Illinois. Okay, back in the machine, I’ve got a schedule to keep here.
Now we’re in 1928, and may I say, that set of twelve eyes you have now is just stunning, I really don’t think anyone’s going to notice, it’s really a minor change, and besides, I told you not to eat pizza from the early 1900’s. This was the year that Ace Stores was incorporated with the goal of having a centralized location to supply the founders’ and owners’ stores. The name of the company comes from the ace fighter pilots of World War I who overcame insurmountable odds to survive.
In the same way, the company’s retail network expands to hundreds of dealers by 1949 and started pulling in $10 million in annual sales. After Hesse retired in 1973, the Ace Hardware was sold to its retailers which turned it into the retailers’ cooperative that it is today. The headquarters also moved to Oak Brook. The independent owners at this point became dealer-owners and shareholders in the company. Pay attention here, you’ve got six pairs of ears now so I know you can hear me. This is not a franchise run business, which means that each store looks different. Even so, the company has endeavored to try and establish consistent product brands so people recognize an element of the brand.
Back to the present then, and it looks like everything didn’t get fixed. Well, look on the positive side, with all those mutated limbs you’re bound to get recognized. Now the people at Ace Hardware can put a name to the, uh, faces. Today, Ace Hardware has 4,500 domestic and international stores and 14 U.S. distribution centers. The annual sales figures are huge, pushing $13 billion a year, making it recognized by Forbes Magazine as one of the top 25 companies in the U.S.
Alright, well now that we’ve got a solid feel for the company’s vision, it’s time to see how you can start your career with the company, even if my little time travel experiment exposed you to gamma radiation and turned you into a walking Picasso painting.
While they may have an iron grip on what they do, there are other companies out there who are vying for your attention. Check out our page on Home Depot, one of the largest hardware stores there is. Menards is always recruiting high quality talent as well. Don’t forget Lowe’s, they are in the top three hardware stores in the nation. Check out our in-depth articles on all three and put your name down for each one to maximize your options!
Ace Hardware Application Online
Even though the company structure of Ace Hardware is broken up into many different owners as part of its retailers’ cooperative set up, the company website offers a great store locator that can put you in touch with your local store and bring you opportunities to submit an online employment form. Once you found a store near you, select it on the map and choose the “See Details” option.
This will direct you to a specific page for that Ace Hardware location. There are hours of operation, and the names of both the owner and the store’s manager. Even more interesting is that you can read the specific story of the owner and how they came to own a location in this company. For example, I was reading the story behind Walter Toole who owns several locations and I found it to be very refreshing how much transparency is present within the company.
His particular story starts all the way back in 1906, but don’t worry, I dismantled the time machine to prevent any future human sculpture accidents. Since 1989, the Toole’s have been running their own Ace Hardware locations because they believe in the company’s motto: “Ace is the helpful place.”
There is a link on the company website to a third party website that is owned by the Toole’s, and you’ll find a similar link on the location you choose. On the Toole’s website I was able to find the online employment form quite easily, and there was an option to download the forms as well, which is always nice. Since you’re dealing with a separate owner and manager, you’ll want to be doubly sure to stop in and introduce yourself as they probably get a lot of random inquiries, and you want yours to stand out from the rest. The most common position that is currently available is the cashier position. You’ll need to be at least eighteen years old to start working with the company.
As a cashier, you’ll just need to have great customer service, and someone who lets their personality shine in all that they do. You will also need to work quickly and efficiently to ensure that everyone is rung up and that purchases happen smoothly. The starting pay is negotiable based on the location where you’re applying, and how much experience you have. Here are some quick qualifications you’ll need for this entry-level position:
- Some Experience is required
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Authorized to work in the United States
- Need Reliable Transportation
- Background Check is Required
Benefits when Working With The Company
There are some attractive benefits you can take advantage of when working with the company. Even if you’re just looking for a part-time job to pay the bills, you’ll still find a lot to love about the unique nature of each store. Benefits packages are widespread and very competitive. Employees who are eligible can receive the following benefits:
- Full Medical Insurance
- Dental Insurance
- Vision Insurance
- Life Insurance
- Paid Vacation
- Holiday Pay
- Retirement Plans
- Discounts on store products and services
Does this seem like the place for you? It should be, because this is a company that values its employees through great benefits and opportunities to grow both within the company and as a person. Not every company is this open about recruiting talented and creative people, and given the fact that it’s not an incorporated company, the fact that individual locations still accept online applications is also a huge bonus.
I think we’ve seen all we need to here. This company needs you and your talents, so head online and locate your nearby location so you can fill out the Ace Hardware application and begin your career with this company that looks for the best and has been succeeding for over 75 years. Thanks as always for reading, and best of luck to you!
