The Company’s History and Structure
99 Cents Only is an American-based retail company that sells products for, wait for it, 99 cents or less. While this was the original concept, things have changed slightly over the years. That being said, most products are still priced at the 99 cent mark.
99 Cents Only was founded by David Gold on February 28, 1969. Most of the locations within the 389 total stores are in the South California region. Other locations are found in Nevada, Texas, and Arizona.
This company is also the owner and operator of Bargain Wholesale which is a company that sells to retailers across the United States and in 15 countries around the world. They have showrooms in major cities and attend trade shows as well.
Back to the 99 Cents Only, though. Gold came up with the idea for this store when he had trouble selling wines at a liquor store he owned. During an interview with the Los Angeles Times in 2001, he said, “Whenever I’d put wine or cheese on sale for $1.02 or 98 cents, it never sold out. When I put a 99 cent sign on anything, it was gone in no time. I realized it was a magic number.”
Gold went on to use this idea for an entire store. In order to drum up publicity, he started by selling televisions for 99 cents on the first day the store was open! Can you imagine the lines? He asked his family members to call TV stations and ask about the commotion which further spread the news.
This tactic is still used today. Whenever a new 99 Cents Only location opens, high priced items are sold for 99 cents on the first day to the first nine customers. Other similar deals are offered to the next 90 people in line on opening day.
The stores have standard computer systems in place to track sales and coordinate with the distribution center in Texas. This center was formerly owned by Albertsons, but was purchased by 99 Cents Only when the company left the Houston market.
In November of 2003, the company modified its pricing to also have prices under 99 cents (such as 69 cents or 49 cents). In 2007, the company was forced to change its tune in the face of costs and inflation. Now they offer items ranging from 99 cents to $99.99.
In October of 2011, the company was purchased by Ares Management and the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board for $1.6 billion. The Gold family stopped working with the company after this sale went through.
99 Cents Only also appeals to pop culture. The advertisements joke that they are open “9 days a week” and they typically insert social commentary into their ads. Some examples are pretty hilarious:
